Mixing Fantasy/Supernatural & Crime/Mystery – A Book & Blog Review: In Search of Justice & Kat Seaholm

Awhile back I was going through the WordPress Reader and came across a blog that looked interesting – Kat Seaholm – Dreamer, Author, Gatekeeper.  I decided to check it out and immediately started following her.  She is an author, a blogger and a cat lover.  And I found her posts capturing my interest.  Especially the A-Z challenge that she has been doing.  Her theme is “All the Things I Love About Writing”.

The anal side of me had to of course go back and start at A (A is for Authors) because I DEFINITELY could not start in the middle of the alphabet!  As of this post she has gotten through P (P is for Plot), but I have honestly only made it through G (G is for Grammar) so far.  My favorite has been B (B is for Bunnies…aka Plot Bunnies)   My lack of progress is mostly because I keep getting distracted by her other posts and more importantly the book that she published on Amazon!

In Search of Justice is book 1 of her The Seeker Files series.  I have to admit at first I saw that this fellow blogger had written and published a book and I thought, “Well good for her!  That is great!” – and that is where it ended.  I have SOOOO many books in my to-read pile (physical and virtual to-read piles) and I really should not be adding more.  However as I read her synopsis of the book I have to admit I was intrigued.

It’s all just fun and games until someone dies.

In a world where supernaturals and humans live side-by-side in peace, that peace can be suddenly shattered. That’s when HSI (Human-Supernatural Investigation) comes into play.

Agent Aletta Sheridan has been with the department for only a little over a month when she’s handed a new case. A murderer is on the loose in Isenton and it’s her job to track the killer down.

Fiercely independent, Aletta is forced by her superiors to partner with another agent. With only a handful of clues to follow, will they be able to stop the killer before anyone else dies?

And then I read a bit about her character development and why and how she wrote this book.  (I honestly can’t remember where – I think it was in all those posts I binged on for awhile on her blog!)  I love books dealing with fantasy and magic.   And my mother-in-law over the years has gotten me interested in mysteries and true-crime books.  And I’ve always been fascinated with the CSI shows on television (My current binge on Hulu is the original CSI show!)

So the combination of my love of fantasy and magic with a mystery crime novel definitely sounded promising.  Then I checked out the Amazon link and found out I could get my hands on the digital version for almost nothing (and if you have Kindle Unlimited you can ACTUALLY get it for NOTHING – I don’t have Kindle Unlimited yet because if I did I would never get any REAL work done!)

So I snagged a copy for my Kindle and started to read.  I finished the book in about two days – that is along with fighting a cold, working full time and being a full time mom to three athletes!  I read a lot but I don’t finish many books quite that fast anymore, so this is really saying something. I really enjoyed the book and can’t wait for the next book in the series (which I just found out is May 15th!)

The plot was well paced and interesting.  The characters were very well developed and really caught my interest.  In fact, in the days since I finished the book I keep finding myself thinking about it.  I will be doing something and it will pop into my head and I’ll think, “I need to hurry up and finish this so I can get back to that story!”, only to realize that I’ve already finished it and now I have to wait for the next book to come out!! UGH!!

I know  – this is not an in-depth book review – honestly you’ll probably never get a really good professional type review from me.  Plus, I’m just getting over a nasty cold that has put me out for the count.  Otherwise, this review would have popped up a few days ago.  However, I can say if you like books about magic/Fae/Mythical Creatures/Supernatural and you like crime/mystery novels – you should check this one out!

Plus – you’ll be supporting a fellow blogger.  I just love that I got to know her first as a blogger and then as an author. So – go check out her blog and her book.  They are both worth your time!

(Oh! And if you get it, read it and post a review on Amazon by midnight April 21st – I know I did not leave you much time! – she is doing a contest.  See this post for the contest Rules)
